So far I’ve given you a glimpse of
Herceg Novi, and of
hiking in the Orjen Massif behind the village. But rest assured, if you’re traveling here for an active holiday – there’s even more to do!
ATV adventure on Luštica peninsula
If you want to see more than just the city, you can take a boat taxi to the beautiful peninsula called Luštica. Once there, you can visit local households and learn more about the history of the place and their crafts today. This little haven has around 400 inhabitants and rural tourism is a big thing for them.
The peninsula has a loot of green space, they call it “Makija” which is a mix of varied vegetation with rocks underneath. This is a great spot to come and enjoy nature, both for tourists as well as the locals of Herceg Novi.
A lot of the farmers have olive groves and make their own olive oil, soap and make sure the small peninsula is kept alive and well. We met up with Ilija Moric, a man very passionate about this place.
Besides showing us his family home, and their organic olive farm and how they make their oil – he also took us on a guided tour of the peninsula on four wheelers. A fun, adventurous and great way to explore this beautiful place! Upon arrival, everyone attending gets their own helmet and an introduction course in how to handle the ATV.
These guided tours include around 2.5 hours of driving around the most beautiful and interesting parts of the peninsula. It’s a tour of 20km that takes you from a village called Tici and up the Obosnik Hill, through some of Luštica’s villages, down to the coast and then back to the starting point.
I did not drive my own ATV though, but sat behind Ilija so that I could take photos of our adventure.
We made a few stops along the way and my favourite one was definitely Ponta Veslo. A small camp is located here and I saw RV’s, tents and hammocks: Just the way I love to travel! Just behind the camp was the most beautiful spot… Wonderfully blue water and amazing rock formations.
I really wanted to just stay here camping, swimming and bouldering!!

We drove around the peninsula some more, just exploring and stopping to talk about different areas. I must say, getting around on a four wheeler is a great and quick way to get to know a place.
I do prefer walking or hiking of course, but with a quick tour like this it’s easier to wander about on your own after.
And this little peninsula does offer a few hiking trails as well which is great!
» hiking trail mark, woooh!

After our guided tour, Ilija treated us to a lovely and traditional lunch at his family home. Then we continued to Klinci Village Resort where we were welcomed by Bogdan and Milica. We had a glass of local wine while they showed us around their beautiful resort; A three centuries old family property.
“KEEPING THE ORIGINAL LOOKS AS IT WAS WAY BACK WHILE THE OLD GENERATIONS WHERE LIVING AND WORKING IN THE OLIVE FIELDS, WITH A JUST FINE TOUCH OF A MODERN STANDARDS OF COMFORT, KLINCI VILLAGE RESORT IS GROWING INTO A PLACE WHERE ONE CAN EXPERIENCE AND LEARN ABOUT THE MOST OF THE VILLAGE LIFE AS IT USED TO BE.
WE ARE RESPECTING OUR LEGACY, OUR TRADITION AND OUR WELL-KNOWN FAMILY HOSPITALITY AND WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT IT AND PRESERVE IT FURTHER : WITH A WARM WELCOME TO EVERYONE”
If you want to spend a few days on Luštica, this resort is an amazing alternative. Bogdan and Milica where very friendly and their place just beautiful. The pace of life felt slower here, relaxed. Because they have their own garden they can offer a lot of good, local and home made food.
Sailing in the bay of Kotor
In the afternoon Nataša and Ilija (yes he has the same name as our guide on the peninsula) from
Montenegro Outdoors picked us up with their boat and we set off on our next adventure; sailing in the bay of Kotor.
They showed us the bay and beautiful cliffs as well as took us snorkelling in clear water and magnificent caves. While sailing we talked a lot about the nature here and the travels they’ve been on. You can tell that they are truly passionate about what they do, and it’s nice to see that they’ve managed to create a living out of their love for nature.
As the sun was setting we sailed home towards Herceg Novi. All of us stayed quiet as we just enjoyed the peacefulness of the ocean and the solitude of the evening setting in. What a day! Up early to explore a gorgeous peninsula, followed by sailing. I snorkelled for the first time in my life, and this was also the very first time I swam inside a cave.
As you can imagine, I slept very well that night.
