Artist Portraits for EWE

Meet my friend Evelina Berqvist. Today her first single is released on Spotify and the last couple of months I’ve worked with her to create material for her as an artist. We’ve shot portraits she can use to promote herself, I’ve shot and designed her album cover and filmed a short video for Spotify. It has been a lot of fun and we are both very pleased with the end results.

How I work with models

Evelina is great to work with. She knows what she wants and is very professional. Usually I put together a moodboard based on what I or a client wants but here she did research on other photos and album covers and put together a good moodboard on Pinterest based on that.

Working with a model / shooting portraits can be hard – maybe one of the hardest types of photography. The dynamic between you and your model is key for the experience and the outcome. With Evelina I have a lot of fun and we know and trust each other which means we are very relaxed in each others company. She took to instructions and feedback super well and was quick to adapt.

In terms of location we were either in Evelina’s home or mine and kept the setting / background interesting but minimalistic: not a lot of things and a neutral color palette. I also only shoot with natural light so we had a soft window light come in from the side in most of them. There’s one exception below where we used a more harsh, direct sunlight.

All photos and the video were shot using my Olympus E-M5 MKIII + 25mm f/1.2 PRO and for the video I played a lot with shooting shot through crystals to get some interesting in camera effects.

Hit me up with any questions you might have on portraits and photography in the comments below. And don’t forget to give her new song a listen, I might be biased but it is really good!

for this photo I actually wanted to use a harsh light and I love how it turned out!
