A day amongst the mountains of Åre

It’s summer and the time for me and Andreas to go on vacation has arrived. We’d long ago decided that we wanted to go on a roadtrip in Sweden and we longed for mountains so we headed north. We drove around a lot but spent a day around Åre where my friend Ida showed us around her neighborhood.

We started the day with some coffee in her little cabin followed by a walk through the mountains where she lived. We stopped to study plants we hadn’t seen before, like the wolfsbane for example. Beautiful but poisonous. Then we watched the clouds roll in to hide the peaks, but we still changed to outdoor clothing, packed some food and went for a ride.

She took us to Vålådalen where we decided to sit on the beach and eat. Lighting a fire when it’s windy and rainy sure isn’t easy but Ida has done it a couple of times before and she finally got it going. Then we made food over an open fire, closely followed by a pot of Lemmelkaffe (a Swedish, northern type of pot boiled coffee) of course. The food was delicious, as it almost always is when it’s made out in the open.

The wind blew up and the rain whipped our faces but we enjoyed it none the less. It’s nice to feel the elements of nature and just be out in the wild, it doesn’t always have to be sunny. Also, being amongst the forces of nature and sensing a storm coming is a pretty awesome thing to experience.

The wind and rain steadily increased so by the time we’d eaten we brought the coffee back to the car where we sat in cover and had some very meaningful conversations about creativity, working as a freelancer, nature and the environment. Ida is a very driven, strong and inspiring girl and it was very rewarding to talk to her.

After a while we decided to head out and take a look at a waterfall that she wanted to show us, and I’m glad she did. It was truly a sight, water can be so powerful!

Slowly the rain subsided and the clouds parted. Just before we were about to head out and make camp for the night, we got to see Åre bathe in a golden sunset. I am so happy we made it there to experience some mountains and wild, untamed nature – and that we got to meet up with Ida of course!

I am eternally grateful that she showed us around and took us to some of her favorite spots. I do hope I get to meet her soon again. I definitely got a taste for the mountains and am currently planning a shorter trip with a friend to experience some more mountainous nature!

  1. Vilka underbart vackra bilder!
Keep up the good work med bloggen här! :)

    Allt gott!

    1. Ja det är oerhört fint och har verkligen mycket att erbjuda alla säsonger, jag hoppas fler hittar dit även när det inte är skidåkning som lockar. Tack för att du läser och kommenterar! Ha det fint :)
